Happy New Year

We were delighted to handle the lighting and special effects for the annual Cheltenham Town Hall New Year’s Eve event. The venue was rammed with party goers entertained until 2am by The Chip Shop Boys and DJ Joey Coyne. The climax of the evening was accompanied by a big screen countdown and confetti cannons.

New Stock – Robe Robin 600 LED

Peak Hire have recently expanded their stock of lighting equipment, responding to customer requests and a busy upcoming autumn/winter schedule.

Our stock of LED fixtures has been supplemented by Robe ROBIN 600 LED wash moving head fixtures. These are incredibly bright and fast, yet consume only 415W a piece. In addition, each unit is only 10 kg – as opposed to 30 kg for a similar conventional moving head wash light.

We’ve also been investing in lighting, dimming and power distribution, and now have over 100 ETC Source Four lanterns and a new Avolites Powercube to add to all the rest of the generic equipment. The rigging department have been investing heavily in truss, with over 100m of Litestructures Astralite now available.

Tall Ships Festival

Gloucester Tall Ships Festival 2011

At the end of August we supplied and setup a couple of line array PA systems for the Gloucester Tall Ships Festival.

The event management team needed to be able to make public information and safety announcements throughout the site – which spans different dock areas and can attract up to 10,000 visitors during the course of the event.

To provide full coverage of the site, four hangs of line array were positioned around the site, using a combination of EAW KF730 and KF740 line array cabinets. Lab Gruppen amplification and EAW UX8800 processing supplied the necessary power and control. Rigging was a combination of our Litec D30 flying towers and Mobiltech ground support stands.

2000 Trees Festival

For the 5th year in a row we’ve been busy providing sound, lighting and rigging for the 2000 Trees Festival – held at Upcote Farm, near our Cheltenham base.

2000 Trees won a ‘Grassroots Festival’ award at the UK Festival Awards 2010, and focusses on New and Underground British music. This event has grown in size and reputation every year, and now includes a new under-cover rock venue, The Cave.

In total we supplied PA and lighting for three stages, using the full range of equipment available.

Main Stage

PA: EAW KF 740 line array with SB1002 subs. Lab Gruppen amplification. Soundcraft MH3/MH2 desks and EAW microwedge stage monitors.

Lighting: Four hangs of LED panels controlled by Archaos Mediamaster. Martin MAC moving heads and Atomic strobes. StudioDue CS4 ACLs, Avolites dimming and MagicQ control. StudioDue CityColours lighting PA scrims and trees

Winterwell

You probably haven’t heard of Winterwell, and there’s a good reason for that. This is a small and beautiful boutique festival (around 1,500 capacity) based at a secret location in the Cotswolds. Now we’ve been there, we know where it is, but if we tell you we’ll have to…

Winterwell has never been actively publicly promoted, and it’s popularity has grown through word-of-mouth alone. Because of this it’s got a real friendly party atomosphere – basically a big group of friends getting together for a hedonistic weekend in the country.

Of course, behind all this fun & games, there’s a whole lot of planning and rigging to make it all work. Peak Hire were on site providing generators, power distribution, sound systems, lighting and rigging services.

Main stage featured the smaller EAW KF730 line array system, with Soundcraft MH3/MH2 desks providing control. Lighting was Martin MAC heads and StudioDue LED fixtures rigged on the self-climbing stage roof. We also provided sound and lighting systems for 4 satellite venues, ranging from a dance tent (capacity 100) to a pub-style live venue for 500.

Highlights of the weekend included the fancy dress competition (the theme this year: board games - think Scrabble, Twister, Mousetrap and Hungry Hippos) and the late-night burlesque show held in a bedouin tent. On stage we particularly liked Rockaoke – karaoke with a live backing band (next year we’re packing the autotune).

We all had a great time at Winterwell, and have been recommending it to our friends ever since. See you there?

University of Warwick Summer Party

Last weekend – and bang in the middle of a heatwave – we were busy providing technical services for the Warwick University Summer Party. This is essentially a one-day festival held to celebrate the end of the university year, and attended by 3,500 students all ready for the holidays to begin.

During build-up we supplied and installed several tonnes of site power, including powerlock cables, 3-phase connection, and distribution to everything from main stage, big top, catering units and the on site generation sets.

Main stage featured a ground supported lighting rig, EAW KF740 line array (on our in-house Litec D30 flying towers) and SB1002 subs. Control was a pair of Yamaha M7CL desks on stage and out front, as well as a Digidesign SC48 FOH for the main act. A Digico SD11 provided sub-mixing and background music services.

The dance tent was equipped with a suitably flashy lighting rig and an EAW KF850 PA.

As ever with these festival-style events, once the show starts it’s really busy (especially for the sound engineers and stage crew), but our staff worked hard and managed to keep to the production schedule throughout.

Triumph Live

The Triumph Live event was held at Mallory Park Circuit in Leicestershire. Peak Hire were tasked with providing stage, sound, lighting and power for an evening concert for 10,000 fans, featuring Mumford and Sons and The Stranglers. The day was a celebration of the 20 year anniversary of the re-launch of the Triumph motorcycle brand.

The stage was supplied by LMS Events, with PA wing extensions for flying the EAW KF740 line array. Under each array were 8 EAW SB1002 subs, all powered by Lab Gruppen FP+ amplification and EAW UX8800 speaker processing. On stage were 12 EAW Microwedges, with EAW SB220 drum subs and monitors controlled by a Yamaha M7 digital desk. At the other end of the multicore was a Digidesign SC48 desk.

After rigging a 45ft Litec QL52 rear truss, 40ft Litec QX30 front truss, and a 6m diameter Litec truss circle, we hung 4 x Studio Due CS4′s, 12 x Studio Due Archibar, 4 x Studio Due Archiled, 8 x Martin Mac700 Wash, 8 x Martin Mac700 Profiles, 6 x 8-Cell blinders, 4 x 4-Cell Blinders, a 24 panel LED wall, 2 x ETC Source Four Par bars of six, and 4 x Thomas Par64 bars of six. Dimming was a pair of Avolites ART2000 and control was an Avolites Pearl 2008.

Before the support and main acts, Triumph Live featured excellent performances by the four Band Battle winners; Cats & Criminals, Diego, The Dunwell Brothers Band and Burning Shapes.
